This was my first formal typography class and the first design class I took at SCAD. One of the major reasons I decided to go back to school after working in field for a time, was my lack of confidence with type. I had basic although workable knowledge of typography, so being able to take a full fledged course on the subject was something to get excited about. The class was pretty grueling, work intensive and one of the most challenging classes to date. I’ve decided to include all the projects in one post as the works where more like exercises then fully developed and realized projects until the final. So here they are! Note: the titles are the names of the given exercises.
Rhythm and Scale
This exercise focused on using this principle of design, with the use of a given typeface.
Type and Image
Here the focus was to use the type to convey the image.
Opportunities in Form
The goal here was to explore the forms of letters to create new forms.
Origin: The Idea in Design
This time the idea was to convey an idea using the one word “origin” by using typography.
Type as Syntax
Finally this last exercise was to produce a typographic design with a given amount of textual content.
Final
This was a research project, for whom I chose Wim Crouwel a famed Dutch typographer. For this I created a poster, ticket for admission, and booklet for a fantasized lecture. The goal was to tie in the other exercises, and to create a design in the spirit of the designer. Wim Crouwel known for his obsessive use of grids inspired the extensive grid work in all the elements I created. I really enjoyed this class I cant say enough on how it spurred tremendous growth within me.
