Kodachrome Brochure (Graphic Design Studio 1)

This project was presented as an open one, granting the freedom to play an experiment within loose parameters. First it had to be a folding brochure of some kind, and second it had to be based on a song by a given song writer. I chose to do a brochure based on the lyrics of Kodachrome by Paul Simon. I decided to go in a totally unexpected and abstracted direction instead of going with the obvious retro themed direction that would be pretty much expected. I chose to focus more on the lyrics and their meaning then on the performance which would have been more limiting. The problem I found was that i might have been a tad ambitious with my approach for this project. While I usually might have to draw up one or maybe two illustrations for a given project, I found myself going way over board with the amount of illustration going into this piece. I even worked at teaching myself how to draw graffiti for the first time and ended up hand writing 90% of all the type that you see. I also found this to be a unique opportunity to experiment with different techniques and visual styles and took full advantage of it. This of course reeked havoc on my school schedule and I found myself falling behind in my other classes. If there was no due date I could still see myself adding more and more to it, hehe… Since the piece ended up so large (48″ x 7″) I experimented with a couple ways to allow me to show them in crisp detail. So I decided in the conceptual stage of my planning to interpret kodachrome as imagination, and wanted to create a landscape in black and white (reality) with imagination living along side it. From there lots of personal imagery went into it and I allowed for a lot of open interpretation of whats going on. Here are some of preliminary sketches that may or may not show up in the final, just to show you a glimpse into the process.
