Collection of work from 3D Design (Winter 09)
This is a collection of four projects done for a 3D design class. The first one above is a cameo self-portrait carved out of a plaster block. It kinda looks like me.
This is a Trompe-l’œil (translates into “trick the eye”). The objective with this was to create a piece of sculpture to “trick the eye” into thinking it was real food. I chose a plate of chili with which, for the most part I’m pleased with the sculpting but when it came to painting the piece it was less then impressive, damn onions…
Next up was to create a sculpture of an animal or self-portrait using planer (flat) surfaces, using a variety of techniques. I chose to do a sculpture of my pup Momo. It is pretty close to 1:1 scale, and probably one of my favorite pieces of work I’ve made thus far.
This project was a bit more structured but evermore complicated, DSS relationships. Basically DSS stands for Dominant, Sub Dominant and Subordinate. This is a hierarchy system that is typically used in industrial design, architecture, and sculpture. We started out with the above just using three rectilinear components to compose a structure…
…then moving into non-rectilinear shapes. This was one of the most complicated things I’ve worked on. Its often said that most people have problems thinking three dimensionally and I found that as primarily a 2D artist this rang extremely true. With time and effort I came away with what i consider a stunning piece of work. So there you have it an entire class in a few sentences. Be sure to check out the gallery below to see some alternative shots of all the projects talked about. Hope you like.
you shuld take a pic of momo and put her right next to her double
